When thinking of Tasmania travel, renting a car comes easily to mind. But there are other ways of getting around too.

Wish to hire a motorhome/campervan/caravan?

This is a fun and adventurous way to see Tasmania. Maui and Britz offer motorhome/ campervan/caravan hire services.

Airport shuttle bus services

These are available at Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. There is also a Spirit of Tasmania shuttle service operating at Devonport. Most adult fares are no higher than AUD 12.

Taxi services

These are available at all arrival points in Tasmania, as well as city/downtown locations.

Just to give you an idea of taxi fares, the fare from Hobart Airport to the city is around AUD 32. From Launceston Airport to the city, it's around AUD 25.

Coach/bus/ferry services

For information on coach/bus services operating around the state of Tasmania, check with Redline Coaches and Merseylink.

For information on bus services operating around city areas, refer to Metro Tasmania.

Need to get cross the Derwent River in Hobart? Instead of the bus, jump aboard a ferry and take the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Derwent River.

Rail services

Apart from tourist lines, there are no passenger rail services operating in Tasmania.

The West Coast Wilderness Railway is a tourist line which operates between Queenstown and Strahan on the West Coast. The trip takes about 5 hours including stops for sightseeing and refreshment.

Running through the rainforest of the King River gorge, the journey promises spectacular views. Not only that, you will have the opportunity to learn about the fascinating history associated with the railway too.
